I wish these words were music,
not just any music,
but the music this man listened to in his shattered bedroom
that very morning,
or maybe every morning while the next bombs lagged behind,
the music that swirled off his ancient record-player
(never mind if it actually played or was just on his mind)
filling the white-dusted air, scaling to the broken moulded ceiling,
flying out of the unframed windows to the ever-creeping labyrinth of streets,
flooding the silent sockets of less fortunate dwellings,
resonating in the sacred vacuum of Alepo.
I wish these words were music,
the music that he used to bring back all the roses,
his wife’s smell on the sheets,
the chattering of sparrows,
the shades of the acacias,
the squealing of the tram,
the calling of the prayer,
the full and glowing bodies of the living,
the blessing of a universe of souls.
Let me at least offer this poem
to honour his faith to reach for beauty through the nightmare,
to thank for the love that he knew how to do.

Ojalá estas palabras fueran música,
mas no una música cualquiera,
sino la que este hombre escuchó entre las ruinas de su dormitorio
esa misma mañana,
o quizás todas las mañanas mientras las próximas bombas se demoraban,
la música que brotó de su antiguo tocadiscos
(no importa que tocara en realidad o sólo en su recuerdo)
llenando el blanco aire polvoriento, elevándose hasta las quebradas molduras,
volcándose por las descabaladas ventanas hacia el creciente laberinto de calles,
inundando las cuencas silenciosas de hogares más aciagos,
resonando en el sagrado vacío de Alepo.
Ojalá estas palabras fueran música,
la música que él uso para traer de vuelta las rosas,
el olor de su mujer sobre las sábanas,
la cháchara de los gorriones,
la sombra de las acacias,
el chirrido del tranvía,
la llamada a la oración,
el redondo resplandor del cuerpo de los vivos,
la bendición de un universo de almas.
Dejadme que al menos ofrezca este poema
para honrar su fe en alcanzar la belleza en medio del infierno,
para dar gracias por el amor que él aún supo hacer.
